The GVB public transport ticket is the simplest way for a visitor to move around Amsterdam: one price, unlimited rides on every tram, bus, metro and ferry the municipal operator GVB runs, valid from 1 to 7 days from EUR 10. No zones, no tapping fees, no arithmetic at the machine, just tap in and out with your phone.
What does the GVB ticket cover?
Everything with a GVB logo: the full tram network that laces the center, the four metro lines including the North South line under the IJ, all city buses and night buses, and the ferries behind Central Station that shuttle to NDSM and the EYE museum for free views of the harbor. Bus 369 between Sloterdijk and Schiphol is the one airport flavored extra on the list.
What does it NOT cover?
The trains. NS rail, including the main airport train between Schiphol and Central Station, needs its own ticket, as do regional buses run by Connexxion, Arriva and EBS. Arriving by air, either buy a separate train single or take the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, which bundles the airport legs with GVB. Day trips toward Zaanse Schans or Keukenhof want the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket instead.
How does the GVB e-ticket work?
Your ticket lives in the GetYourGuide app and starts at the timeslot you select. Scan the barcode at the gates or door readers on every entry and exit. The operator is strict here: no PDF copies, no screenshots, no printouts, or the system can flag it and double charge your card. Phone battery is your travel document, so carry a power bank.
Which GVB ticket duration pays off?
The 1 day ticket at EUR 10 beats singles from your third ride. The multi day versions fall steeply per day, so a 4 day city break usually lands around half the daily cost of buying day tickets one by one. Pick the number of days matching your whole stay: the compact center rewards walking, but the trams win every rainy evening and every museum on the far side of town.
Who should buy the GVB Amsterdam ticket and who should not?
Buy it alongside passes with no transport, the Go City passes above all, or as your only ticket if you sightsee for free on foot and only need movement.
